I won't leave home without it!

This book contains the most current and comprehensive coverage tourism industry on the market today. I enjoyed reading this book due to the excellent writing style of the authors. It is very well organized so finding topics of interest was no problem. It lists many citations to other sources and is well researched. The author's educational credentials and other accomplishments are listed (and are very impressive.) Cook and Yale have done extensive research and publishing in tourism. I find this work very credible and user-friendly. I know that I won't leave home without it!

Very high-quality paperback and phrasebook

by magellan from Santa Clara, CA on 2003-12-28
In addition to the phrasebook, and although it's reflected in a higher price, this book has very high-quality production values and materials for a contemporary paperback book. Paper is nice, high-quality gossy, and pages are sewed in signatures as well as glued into the binding, for years of use. Chapters are color-coded with icons on the page edges. Roman phoneticization of Arabic words is set in blue type. Tables use color, and illustrations are in color. The cover looks like durable, woven canvas with a waterproof, plasticized coat. The words and phrases show short-vowel markings, normally not indicated in adult books, which will help with the learning of the words, and making this book a good general vocabulary building book for the non-expert in the language. In addition to the phrasebook, there is a guide to the alphabet and pronunciation, a brief grammar section covering some crucial points of the grammar, and a reference section containing tables of weights and measures, expressions of time, days and months, and so on. At the end is a considerable 80-page English-to-Arabic only dictionary that contains about 2300 words. The front and back covers have a map of the Arabic world. Almost no expense appears to have been spared (literally) to make this a quality product. The phrasebook section is organized in typical fashion with chapters devoted to various useful situations and topics, such as Eating and Drinking, Events/Entertainment, Clothing, Beach/Sports. There is even an "At the Police Station," and "At the Dentist" section, which, hopefully, you will never need! And there is a section with frequently used phrases. I couldn't find a figure for how many phrases are contained in the book, but as I said, there are about 2300 words in the dictionary, providing a fairly substantial vocabulary. This is a very high-quality paperback, which, although that's reflected in the price of 13 bucks, which is anywhere from 50% to 100% more than the comparable Berlitz, Lonely Planet, and Passport series phrasebooks, I think is still reasonable considering the features and the quality you're getting.

CHAPTER I.TAKING A LINE IN THE SERVICE. That there is a tide in the affairs of men, has very naturally become a figure of frequent and almost hackneyed use in the cockpits, gun-rooms, and even the captains' cabins of our ships and vessels of war. Like its numerous brethren of common-places, it will be found, perhaps, but of small application to the real business of life; though it answers capitally to wind up a regular grumble at the unexpected success of some junior messmate possessed of higher interest or abilities, and helps to contrast the growler's own hard fate with the good luck of those about him. Still, the metaphor may have its grateful use; for certainly in the Navy, and I suppose elsewhere, there is a period in the early stages of every man's professional life at which it is necessary that he should, more or less decidedly, "take his line," in order best to profit by the tide when the flood begins to make. It is difficult to say exactly at what stage of a young officer's career the determination to adopt any one of the numerous lines before him should be taken: but there can be little doubt as to the utility of that determination being made early in life. In most cases, it is clearly beyond the reach of artificial systems of discipline, to place, on a pair of young shoulders, the reflecting head-piece of age and experience; neither, perhaps, would such an incongruity be desirable. But it seems quite within the compass of a conscientious and diligent commanding officer's power by every means to cultivate the taste, and strengthen the principles and the understanding of the persons committed to his charge. His endeavour should be, to train their thoughts in such a manner that, when the time for independent reflection and action arrives, their judgment and feelings may be ready to carry them forward in the right path; to teach them the habit, for instance, of discovering that, in practice, there is a positive, and generally a speedy pleasure and reward attendant on almost every exercise of self-denial. When that point is once firmly established in the minds of young men, it becomes less difficult to persuade them to relinquish whatever is merely agreeable at the moment, if it stand in the way of the sterner claims of duty."Download Fragments Of Voyages And Travels Now!"

Description

This study examined the relationships between American travelers' unconscious needs for achievement, affiliation, and power and their preferences for adventure, culture, business, and escape tours. Seven Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) pictures prompted respondents to create 980 related stories and the unconscious needs for achievement, affiliation, and power were scored. The null hypotheses were that American travelers' unconscious needs do not relate with their travel preferences for tour packages. Two strong relationships were detected: one between the need for achievement and the preference for an adventure tour; and the other between the need for affiliation and the preference for a culture tour. This study concurred with the validity of McClelland's (1985) theory of motivation and discovered the relationships between American travelers' unconscious motives and their preferences for tour packages. Implications of management and marketing in tourism were discussed.
