One gloomy Fall day, tired of the rat race, Liza and Andy Copeland decided to pack up their three small sons and set sail for distant horizons. What began as a two-year expedition turned into a six-year adventure to 82 countries and a circumnavigation of the world. JUST CRUISING tells of the family's unique experiences from England to Australia as they sailed through the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Galapagos Islands and South Pacific, and of arriving in Australia to represent Canada in the Tall Ships events during the Australian Bicentenary celebrations. JUST CRUISING gives valuable information on cruising and traveling, and shows the realities of taking a young family along. It includes a 'How-to' section and glossary. A Canadian bestseller it is an inspiration for sailors, travellers, families and dreamers.

Bagheera and Nimbus reunite via "Just Cruising"

by David Seller from Vancouver, BC on 2000-01-31
During our 1987 voyage to the South Pacific aboard SV Nimbus, our family had the pleasure of joining up with the Copeland family and Bagheera. Our wonderful family times together are brought back to life through the pages of "Just Cruising".Liza's work is an inspiration to all and accurately portrays the cruising life. The book is an informative guide for couples and families. "Just Cruising" shows how you can harness the wind and, with planning and caution, can safely cruise to remote and exotic lands. It includes wonderful descriptions of destinations, sights and cultures. Two informative 'how-to' sections complete the book.During our return voyage to the South Pacific in 1999, we were shocked when we were asked "Are you the Nimbus family as shown in the book "Just Cruising"? From French Polynesnia throughout our voyage to New Zealand, we were routinely approached by young and old, eager to discuss the joy of "Just Cruising"! The book is still in date and used by many as a useful overview to read before making landfall. In conclusion, "Just Cruising" is a must read whether cruising the Med, Caribbean or South Pacific! Good work Liza!David Seller SV Nimbus

Ever daydream about what it's like to quit your job, sell your house and most of your possessions, say good-bye to your neighbors, and set sail with your family--permanently? Tom and Mel Neale left their 9 to 5 world nearly two decades ago and never looked back. In 1979 the Neales left their law and education careers and traded their suburban home for a three-room boat. Now their neighborhood is a Chesapeake Bay cove, or a secluded Bahamian beach, or anywhere else they choose to anchor. And along the way they raised two daughters. For the Neales, living aboard and cruising is about taking control of their world and their environment, a sometimes difficult but always rewarding existence. All in the Same Boat is one family's testament to the belief that you can lead your own life, whatever that might be. For the Neales, it hasn't been a vacation. Instead of living to work, they work to live, but they make time for adventure and play, too. Here's everything you need to know to follow them: choosing the right boat; provisioning for long-term cruising; getting along in close quarters; learning what you can leave behind; earning a living--and how to hold on to the money; what to expect in the cruising life, and how to handle it; preparing the crew and boat; raising--and educating--kids; keeping in touch; making the ocean your backyard.

A great practical and insightful guide to cruising and living aboard!

by Nathan Moser from Larkspur, CA on 2005-07-27
My wife and I found this book shortly before purchasing a Gulfstar 47 like the one the Neals' owned while writing this book, and it was a significant factor in our deciding to purchase the boat. In our nearly four years' living aboard in Sausalito, we were never able to quite 'cut the cord' and go cruising as we'd hoped, but we gleaned a quite a bit of useful information from this book, as would would anyone with a boat in the 30-60 ft range that they intend to live on. We found many of the insights (everything from how to anchor without endangering others or being endangered by others, to hints on how to not drive each other crazy while hanging out together below decks during the rain) repeated in our own experiences and the experiences of others who had cruised from Alaska to Ecuador. We moved off the boat in anticipation of the birth of our daughter (we've known people who've raised infants aboard, and decided we're not that hardcore), but this book remains on our shelf in anticipation of the year when our children are old enough to undertake the voyage!

Wonderful

This is a rare book about cruising that gives you a taste of the attitudes of long-term voyagers. I loved reading a book in which the author reveals his desire for hot showers and ice-cubes for his evening cocktails. The spartan life may be ok for me but my wfie and kids? Lots of good technical information. Escape the system that has enslaved us without our knowing!

Fantastic

I loved this book! As a current live aboard I really enjoyed everything presented about family life for cruisers. The insights the young daughters give helps understand how kids aboard percieve the experience. Excellent reading for anyone thinking of moving onto a boat with a family.

All in the same boat - Bitterness and Contempt

by Juan DeOlivares from Oakland, CA USA on 2001-05-08
Although there is much useful information contained in this book, the tone is simply awful. After reading this book I could not help but think that Mr. Neale is a bitter man who gave up his former life only to find himself broke living his chosen life of perpetual vacation. According to the author the rest of us are stuck in mindless consumption working away in sterile cubicles. The author seems to have conveniently forgotten that his boat, fuel, supplies, food, computers, software, etc., etc. would not exist along with his chosen lifestyle without the rest of us working our jobs and actually contributing something. In addition, the author uses every opportunity to present examples of incompetent boaters who unlike the master seaman that he is are a hazard to themselves and others. Continuous whining about the faults of current boat designs also adds to the overall obnoxious tone of the book. According to the author boat designers and manufactures don't know what they are doing. He thinks that a boat designed for weekend use and docked in a harbor should work just as well continuously at sea. If that is what he wanted, he should have bought a vessel designed for commercial use and paid the price, not whine about design tradeoffs that were made to make boating more affordable to the public. What is missing from this book is a little humility and gratitude. Gratitude that he as been able to live his dream instead of contempt for others who do not choose to or are unable.

I want to quit my job and travel.

by from on 1999-05-24
I read Liza's first book "Just Cruising" and couldn't wait to read the sequel. I really enjoyed reading about her trip around the world. I wanted to leave my job behind and join her family. What an exciting life!

An Excellant Follow-up to, "Just Cruising."

by Ronald C. Pearson from Houston, TX on 1998-10-19
This is an excellant follow-up to the book, "Just Cruising." It is written in everyday language with descriptions and annodotes that puts the reader in the boat with the Copelands. As in her first book, Mrs. Copeland covers the subjects most sailors are interested in and leaves out the mudane. No maps and positions, no how to repair or replace, just good fun on a trip around the world. Read, "Just Cruising," first and then this book and you'll be packing the kids and heading for the boatyard...
