I cut out pages from the other, heavier, books; but, this book I needed with me to refer to. I did a lot of internet searching for places to see/things to do, shopping, etc. but this, by far, was the best guidebook. I also have Frommer's Vancouver & Victoria book and it's coming with me on my upcoming trip.

I was very disappointed in the book. I am going on a cruise with Holland America on July 4th, and every thing the cruise has sent me was better information then what the book had to say.....in facted the book had a lot of the exact same stuff as did the cruise information....

While Harry Pidgeon's feat of sailing around the world is exceptional, and his writing style clear and concise, he offers few insights into sailing or his life. The book is fashioned after Joshua Slocum's "Sailing Alone Around The World:" Or equally as likely, Pidgeon and Slocum were two men of a like mind. In any event, both men portray that 19th century reserve so characteristic of the Englishmen. Such reserve in the face of near scrapes with death maybe admirable, but it does not make for as interesting reading.

This book will make you long to go cruising!

This book is special to me as it opened my eyes to the reality that anyone with a true desire to see the world can make it a reality. It sparked in me a desire to 'go cruising' which I will be doing this summer when I leave on a trip to circumnavigate the world by sailboat. I was inspired by Harry Pigeons' account of his voyage aboard the 'Islander', and I think you will be too.

This is a book that could be a 13 yr old's fantasy. but it is a true and wondeful account of a family's sailing adventure.It should be read by the entire family, as an after dinner treat or a Saturday morning diversion. Good for discussion

Cruise of the Blue Dolphin

This is a compelling and true account of an amazing adventure. In the middle of the great depression these parents took their kids out of school and exposed them to running a hurricane at sea, exploring the Galapagos Islands before they were settled, visiting a prison island at huge risk where the prisoners were known to shoot at visitors and throw them down wells. No-Holds-Barred home schooling on the open seas! I found it inspirational as a parent and just plain fun to read aloud around the fireplace. My 5 year old always begged for another chapter, I was sad to see it end.

I am reading this book right now and I'm about half way through it. I am enjoying it very much. It is an easy read. It's like reading a daily journal of this couple from when they booked the cruise and while they are on it. I have been on 10 cruises, so reading this brings me back to the ships I've been on and can relate to what is happening to them. It is a fun, lighthearted book that I would recommend reading.

I read this book in a matter of hours, right before I went on a very similiar cruise - my first. The book was hilarious & very informative with good tips. It was so enjoyable and easy to read. Good for anyone that is interested in taking a cruise or has been on a cruise.

This is a story about a couple's first cruise and I was concerned that as a long-time "cruiseaholic", I might think it stupid or boring. But I'm really glad I gave it a chance. It is very quick reading and very funny. I saw myself on some of my past cruises doing the things the author described and that made it even funnier. I think it would be very enjoyable for someone contemplating cruising for the first time. If they read this book, they will want to go! It made me smile whenever I read a chapter.

Am I the only person who found this book boring?

I bought this book hoping to gain some insight about the cruising experience. What I got was a dull narrative about an average Joe's cruise experience. Nothing particularly exciting or noteworthy. It is simply a small book (108 pages) about a middle aged couple's experience on a cruise ship. They obviously had money (a room with a veranda and private butler!) so I couldn't really relate to their experience as a newbie to the cruise industry with a limited income. Try "Cruise Confidential" instead, a much more interesting book about the behind the scenes look at the operation of a cruise ship.

Humor for the novice and experienced cruiser.

I enjoyed the laughs this book gave me. As a novice cruiser, it made me look at the lighter side of planning our dream vacation. The story begins with to cruise or not. Those are the same thoughts,and yes,even the same words Ive had with my own spouce.The book tells it like it is,from the authors persepctive. There are some funny episodes to laugh along with.My favorite had nothing to do with his cruise,but rather his nanny making bread. "Chester" is just a regular guy,so this story is easy to read.He gave us a great story of his first cruise! I enjoyed this book very much. I even mailed a copy to my travel agent. For would be cruisers and even the pros I reccomend this book.
