Over the past 20 years, cruising has grown to become one of the most popular vacation options. When planning a cruise, today's vacationer has an unprecedented selection of ships and itineraries from which to choose. While prices vary considerably based on the quality of the cruise line, the level of accommodations and the duration of the cruise, one of the best ways to enjoy a cruise vacation at a discount is to look for last minute cruise specials.

Finding a Deal. It used to be that cruising was a vacation enjoyed only by the well to do. In the early part of the twentieth century, cruise ships were few in number and catered to an intimate, more affluent group of travelers looking for a travel experience that would take them to exotic ports of call. It wasn't until the postwar years that cruising caught the attention of the general public. As the American middle class grew and became more affluent, the cruise market grew with them. Still, as with any resort style vacation, cruising is by no means cheap. Even budget cruises can cost thousands of dollars for a family of four. Fortunately, there are deals to be found if you know where to look.

Book Online. The easiest way to find deals is on the internet. Websites, including Orbitz and Expedia, offer a range of deals updated daily. These include bookings on today's most popular lines, including Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. The savings are truly impressive, with discounts of up to 75%. Depending on the cruise you book, this can mean thousands of dollars in savings. One advantage of booking over the web is that all options are laid out in front of you, so that you can compare each itinerary at a glance. Some sites, including Expedia, provide reviews of the various cruises being offered. One thing to keep in mind with discount cruises, however, is that you do have to be somewhat flexible in your travel plans, keeping your schedule open for trips that may depart in as little as a few day's time.

Consult an Agent. Another way to find deals on cruises is to consult a travel agency. Travel agents, as representatives of the various cruise lines, have insider knowledge as to which cruises are not fully booked and would therefore be most likely to discount their fares.

Contact the Cruise Lines. One final option is to contact the cruise lines directly. Ask if the they are offering deals on any ships that are not fully booked. After all, with the economy tight, many cruise lines are willing to offer discounted fares in order to fill cabin space.

Find Your Discount Cruise. Last minute cruise specials are a great way to enjoy a cruise vacation without breaking the bank. To find a deal, check any of the major discount travel sites. Or, if you prefer, call your travel agent or simply contact the cruise lines directly. Bon voyage!
