Chapter 1 How Easy Is Romance on a Cruise Ship?I had been onboard my first ship for five days when I went to the crew bar and met a woman from Trinidad and Tobago. She was a black woman and she was overweight, maybe even a little flabby, but such a sweetheart. She asked a lot of personal questions and listened closely and was genuinely interested in my responses. I asked her personal questions, and she answered every one of them. I saw her the next night in the crew bar and she looked upset so I went over and sat down.“What’s wrong?” I asked.“I just had an argument with the chief purser,” she said with her Caribbean accent.“That’s too bad.”“Yes, I do not get along with the pursers on this ship very well,” she said, starting to tear up a little. “I do not have many friends onboard.”Although I liked her, I could understand why others might shy away. She had slow, almost voodoo-like mannerisms that bordered on creepy. But she was so easy to talk to and, like me, perfectly content to sit and talk one on one.“So do you have a girlfriend?” she asked, changing the subject.“No.”“Have you been with anyone on the ship yet?”“Nope. It’s actually been twelve years since I slept with someone.”“Come on now.”“It’s true.” I said, and then told her why (more on that later).“Hmm. That’s fascinating. You know, I used to sleep with a skinny white guy from England on my last ship. You remind me of him.”“Oh, yeah?”“He and I had lots of fun, and I never left him unsatisfied. I may not look it, but I’m actually a really good lover.”“You don’t say.”“I’ve been with lots of men in my day. I’m forty-one, after all. And in my years, I’ve learned exactly what men like and how to please them. And now”—she took a sip of her drink—“and now all the men I sleep with are extremely satisfied.”I had always imagined athletic girls—especially flexible athletic girls—to be the best lovers. But this lady from Trinidad had me rethinking that assumption. Maybe it was just another one of the after effects of abstinence, but those voodoo mannerisms were now bordering on sensual.“Would you like to have sex with me?” she asked, taking another sip of her drink. “We could go to my cabin right now.”Woodrow.I couldn’t believe how quickly the opportunity had presented itself. “I might be interested in that.”“Might?”“Yeah.”“But not right now?”“Yeah, not just yet.”“Okay, well, you think about it and I’ll call you later this week.” She got up and left me at the table, alone with my thoughts. My cabin phone rang at 8:00 p.m. two days later.“Hi, it’s me,” she said. “How are you?”“I’m good. How are you?” I responded.“Good, good. Are you ready to do what we talked about the other night?” she asked, wasting no time on idle chit-chat.Before I get into what happened next, I need to you click the "Add to Shopping Cart" button on the right!..Table of Contents:Chapter 1 - How Easy Is Romance on a Cruise Ship?Chapter 2 - How to Get a Cruise Ship JobChapter 3 - The Pros and Cons of the Highest Rank OnboardChapter 4 - The Consequences of Losing Your Virginity at SeaChapter 5 - How Much Can You Drink Without Dying?Chapter 6 - What Sailing Through a Hurricane Will Do to Your Cruise ShipChapter 7 - My Biggest Mistake From Working at SeaChapter 8 - Ship Sociology - How People Really Act When No One Is WatchingChapter 9 - How Safe Are You on a Cruise Ship?Chapter 10 - How NOT to Break Up with a RomanianChapter 11 - What You Shouldn't Do With a Metal Dart on a Cruise ShipChapter 12 - How to Decontaminate a Cruise ShipChapter 13 - What You Shouldn't Say to the CaptainChapter 14 - You Won't Believe the Things Passengers DoChapter 15 - When It's Okay to Quit Your Dream Job

Dull and Boring.

by Nancy T. Durnal from on 2010-09-07
I found this book to be quite boring and not very well written. If you would like to know how many women the author slept with in his two years on board Carnival Cruise ships then this is the book for you. However, that being said, I did learn a few things about cruise ships that I did not know before reading Jay Herrings' book. I won't bore you with their details you will just have to muddle through the book. I wish Jay could have expanded his writing and included more information about the ports of call and maybe more about Carnival Cruise Line. I have read better non-fiction books about life on board cruise ships. Maybe there is a crew member out in the world who has worked on another cruise line besides Carnival who can give the reader a different perspective on ship life.I gave this book a three star rating because I did learn a few things, and it takes courage to leave your land life behind and work on a cruise ship for eight months or so with little time off. So, read the book and see if my review is accurate.

Appropriate Title

by Gator Princess from Florida on 2010-08-24
Enjoyed the behind the scenes insight into ship life and the personal reflections of a crew member. Book would have been more enjoyable (and much shorter) if instead of repetitive detail, the author simply stated that excessive drinking and promiscuity are frequent.

Perfect for anyone entering this industry.

by Jmack from on 2010-06-28
I have just been hired to work for a cruise company and I wanted to find some good reference material and I can say without a doubt that this book makes for the perfect reference for anyone entering the cruise industry or even passengers who are interested in the other side of the spectrum. Herring gives the good with a constant reminder of the bad that comes from working on a cruise ship. He even peppers in the crazy on top of it all! This book is an absolute must read and has motivated me to get ready for my new job! I can't wait to start!

LOVED IT

by Natalie R. Lynch from Denver on 2010-06-04
I am not much of a reader but I could not put this book down. The author is an interesting and hilarious character. When you put that interesting character in absurd situations, you get the kind of stories you cannot make up. I actually laughed until I cried at certain points. In between all that, you actually learn about cruising and I am a much better cruise consumer now.

If You Ever Wondered What Happens Below Your Deck...

by orr333 from Minnesota! on 2010-05-06
Being a family that loves cruising and from knowing one performer from a cruise ship, I had heard some stories. None of them compared to the stories in this book! I love the diversity of the crew on a ship and the many beautiful women from all around the globe. Now, when I see them, I will wonder what they did last night. Are they tired? Do they smile with a twinkle in their eye at another crew member? Which passengers will have sex with a crew member on this cruise?Jay's perspective is interesting and coming from a very moral background, even he is powerless against the "grind" of the ship! This book is a quick read...and leaves you waiting for the next story to see what will happen next!

so sweet

by Kathryn S. Leonard from Phoenix, AZ on 2007-07-04
My son (2 years) absolutely loves this book. It is so simple and so sweet; we usually cap off our bedtime reading with it. The previous reviewer was right- this book is impossible to read without love in your voice, and my son absolutely responds. Our nightime ritual is not complete without it.

A touching children's book

by Jaylyn from Philadelphia on 2007-06-07
The easy, loving text and the bold yet sweet style of the illustrations makes this book a pleasure to read. My baby is 20 months old and sits quite still when looking at the pages and listening closely to the story, because you cannot tell it without love in your voice. This story, especially the first page, the art, the eyes on the people, the way the enviorment is drawn has whispers of Eric Carle. It will remind you of his children's books. However, not really a copy, perhaps an inspiration? The boy throwing the leaves into the air makes my older daughter talk about Autumn. The vibrant colors and sweet interaction between parent and child is very loving. This is one of those books when you just want to hug your child as you're reading to them.

parents and children read together

by Melissa Sack from georgia on 2007-03-24
The bond between parents and their children is very strong. This simple picture book celebrates that bond. The parents that are features in the book let their children know just how special they are to them. From the first break of day to the going down of the sun their children brings smiles to their faces and warm their hearts. The book was great to read aloud to our girls. It kept their attention well. Children need to know that they are loved by their parents and this book will allow for that window to open for that discussion

Description

A simple way to start your day that burns fat and sheds pounds. Eight minutes a day is all you need to improve your metabolism, build calorie-burning muscle and provide your brain with good-mood chemicals. This is combined with an eating programme that helps you regulate your daily food intake to the right amount.

Fitness trainer Jorge Cruise has helped 3 million cyberspace clients lose weight, and now he's headed for your bookshelf with the same goal in mind. In just eight minutes a day, says Cruise, you can drop two pounds of fat per week, change your shape, and gain muscle and energy. His secret formula: an inspirational "wake-up talk," followed by strength training two muscle groups per day, eating according to his "eating card" program, and keeping a journal. For exercise, Cruise presents a varied, 28-day program of illustrated exercises using dumbbells. Why the emphasis on strength training? While aerobics burns calories while you're exercising, adding muscle revs up fat burning at rest by increasing your metabolic rate. Every pound of muscle you gain burns an extra 50 calories per day. You'll look better and feel younger and more energetic, resulting in more activity, burning more calories, he says. Cruise's eating plan emphasizes "good" (omega) fats, complex carbohydrates, high-quality protein (low in saturated fat), and vegetables, with dairy, fruits, and "treats and cravings" in moderation. His "Eating Card System" gives you an allotment of portions from each of the food groups. If you're the kind who likes the regimentation of following a specific program every day, Cruise will get you moving, eating better, and losing weight. --Joan Price

Jorge's plan works for me!

by K. Weiss from Redondo Beach, CA United States on 2009-10-08
I first found Jorge Cruise in the [...] Connection magazine. I downloaded his free "Belly Fat Report" and then purchased 8 Minutes in the Morning. In the past I've tried every diet out there from Atkins to The Zone to South Beach, etc. Most of the time I would lose weight, become very frustrated with the deprivation, stop the program and gain the weight back. I never realized until I read this book as to why I was constantly craving sugar. I WAS the biggest sugar addict on the planet. I loved fruit, fruit juices, soda and every kind of sweet out there. On Jorge's plan, you pay close attention to your sugar intake (it doesn't mention this in the book but you should strive for no more than 15gm sugar/day and 6 servings of carbohydrates). Most plans lump all carbs into the same undesirable category. Anyway, I didn't find the first week to be exactly starvation, as some reviewers have pointed out, but I did get hungry a few times and chewed quite a bit of sugar-free gum! I felt great after the first week and very much looked forward to having more food starting with week 2. Bottom line: I no longer crave sugar, and I actually treated myself to a half-slice of cheesecake on my birthday. I ate 3 bites on the birthday, 3 bites the day after, and 3 bites the day after that. For me to do anything less than gobble up the entire dessert is unheard of. I am so glad that I am now in control of my eating instead of the other way around. I recently saw a youtube video of Dr. Wayne Dyer on Ellen Degeneres' talk show and he interviewed Jorge Cruise, who told him that in the 1800s people ate an average of 13gm sugar per day, and now it is 245gm/day. Dr. Dyer limited his sugar intake to about 25-30gm/day and lost 15 excess pounds in one month. This program may not work for everyone, but if you are BIG TIME addicted to sugar, I'd give it a try. I've lost 16 pounds and have quite a bit left to go, but I am very confident that I will get there because this is so easy. The daily exercises are simple and only require a set of weights. P.S. After ONE WEEK on Jorge's program my cholesterol dropped 25 points.

I was looking for an exercise program and ended up buying a diet - not what I had in mind. Very misleading - won't purchase anything else by Cruise.

Cruise makes fitness easier

by CoachKathleenR from Corning, NY United States on 2009-05-26
I've been using Jorge Cruise books for about five years. Overweight and basically lazy, this was the way to get myself moving early in the morning. All strengthening exercises. If you're more than 30 pounds overweight and really out of shape, try the companion book: 8 Minutes in the Morning: Real Bodies, Real Shapes. Now I'm also using his hips and thighs book and his belly book. I wore out 8 Minutes in the Morning and bought this new copy. Honestly, only eight minutes worth of exercising combined with a seasonable diet (he lets you eat sweets!) can make a difference.Cruise has done his research on nutrition and fitness and explains it all in a way it's easy to understand. Speaking of easy, the exercises are limited to two parts of the body each day, each week. For example, on Monday, he gives one exercises (4 sets) to strengthen the back and one for the chest. Tuesday, shoulders and... Sundays off. New exercises for Week 2 and 3, then start over. Who can't spare 8-10 minutes?!What makes this particularly appealing is that he's been there, done that. Cruise admits to having been overweight and way out of shape (see photos). He's also not afraid to use photos of real-sized women (see Real Bodies, Real Shapes book), proving that a big woman can be fit and beautiful.

8 minutes in the morning

I have found the exercises in this book to be very user friendly. I originally checked out the book at the local library and liked it so much that I purchased it for myself. However, after being involved in the program for three weeks I was in an accident and fractured my shoulder. I am on the mend now and should be able to resume the program in a few weeks.
