Looking for a warm vacation?

by Rob Lerman from Roslindale, MA on 2000-04-19
Tropical Family Vacations gives a nice introduction to family travel in Florida, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mexico. For each island or place, the author provides an overview with a description, visitor information, language and currency. All the listings--resorts and attractions--are oriented toward families. I was pleased to find both 800 numbers and web addresses. The descriptions are writtenin a pretty objective fashion. Expect description rather than evaluation. If you (and your kids!) know you want a warm vacation, but don't know where to go, this is a good first step in planning.

A lovely Caribbean island and its people awaken in author Robert Benson a sense of place and home. The islanders’ warmth and welcome prompt a new understanding of ideas of beauty, community and spiritual belonging. “We live in a world where such welcome and gentleness and civility are increasingly rare. Most of the conversation between strangers is terse and quick and far too often, it is cold and rude. It can even be that way, more often than we care to admit, among people who are not strangers. And such is the way of the world that we live in that we are almost stunned by welcome whenever it breaks out around us, and we are certainly drawn to the people and to the places where we find such welcome in abundance.”

Home from home

by Nettie from West Indies on 2008-01-23
Knowing where this island is and most of the people mentioned in the book, I have discovered that there is a lot to learn about the place I call home myself. The book is very easy to read and is so true to life out here in the West Indies. I really hope the author and his wife enjoy their paradise!

Hated to see the book come to a close.

A delectable read. Robert and Sara, will you be there when we get there? I hope so.

Celebrates the simple things

by Christian Book Previews.com from on 2006-08-22
On busy days filled with interruptions and stress, I often fantasize about escaping to an island paradise. Which is precisely what author Robert Benson and his wife have customarily done each year on their anniversary. Over the decades, they have polished this yearly trip into a fine art. Benson takes us along in Home By Another Way.Having raised children, attended church, and built careers, Benson and his wife holiday on the islands and bring home with them a piece of paradise. "Not only is our calendar a little skewed," Benson wrote, "we do not even operate on what others would call a normal workday schedule, either. In the first place, we both work at home, and our workday does not begin with a traffic report. My commute is about thirty-five steps to my studio in the back garden. Sara does not even leave the house; her office is in the little parlor at the end of the hall." Back home in Tennessee, the Bensons have learned to live on island time.An incurable romantic, Benson helps readers find the holy in the ordinary. Home By Another Way celebrates the simple things in life including family heirloom furniture, appreciation for our personal preferences, and the comfortable conversation traditions between people who have spent a lifetime getting to know each other. In between the picturesque descriptions of beach, sunset, and birds are the witty observations and gallant humor of the all-grown-up son of beloved writer and speaker, the late Bob Benson and self-proclaimed nester and winsome speaker, Peggy Benson. - PeggySue Wells, Christian Book Previews.com

I want a romantic man like this writer in MY LIFE

by Lollie P from the tropics on 2006-05-30
This has to be one of the most romantic books I've ever read--and I'm a huge Jane Austen fan! I love how the writer sees the world. And the love that shines through on each page--love for this island AND love fo his wife. What a wonderful book that I will read again and again.

Time for a vacation?

by P. Luna from Montgomery, AL USA on 2006-05-30
Robert Benson is my favorite author, and he has done it again! This time, I don't need to pack to go on vacation. Instead, I get to relax and slow down on a beautiful island with people I love. As always, Robert Benson causes my soul to remember what is really important in and about life. Don't miss this opportunity to kick-back and enter into a simpler more reflective world. Perfect for a day on the beach or a night on the couch. You'll love it!

Only includes some islands.

by from on 2003-03-20
This book only covers the islands the author calls "The Lesser Antilles." I was mainly interested in the Dominican Republic, and its not even mentioned. Check the sample pages first for the Table of Contents to see if the islands you are interested in are included. Other than that, the information was OK.

Great resource book!

by from on 2003-11-24
I bought this when it first came out and found it really helpful, especially in some of the more unusual budget suggestions like the Guavaberry Spring Bay Vacation Homes on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. Then when the author revised this book in "Tropical Family Vacations" I picked up a copy of that book and have used it instead since resorts in the Caribbean seem to change so frequently. I still refer to this earlier book for its more extensive introductions on each island. I consider it an excellent book, but would refer readers who want more current info to the updated book instead.

Skip this out of date title

by Dr. Eric J. Karson from Bala Cynwyd, PA USA on 2003-01-25
This 1995 book is far out of date, listing several closed resorts. Further, the book does not include any information you couldn't find in a resort's brochure, or on its Web site. No new information, nor objective reviews of the resorts - skip this title. It doesn't even deserve one star.

Evan Ward's compelling study provides analytical insight into the evolution of today's principal tourism destinations in the Spanish Caribbean. Packaged Vacations examines the political and economic forces that led to the creation of resorts in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, as well as the impact tourism has had on local environments, economies, and cultures.   By comparing and contrasting a number of case studies, Ward reveals how historical, political, architectural, planning, and environmental factors led to the unique identities of resorts throughout the region. He also demonstrates that the growth of tourism in the region into a major economic force is driven as much by local and European interests as by those of American corporations.
