Caribbean Cruise Album

Caribbean Cruises - Paradise Awaits - Part One

With the invention of modern day jetliners many thought that passenger ships were doomed and would go the way of train travel as more people chose the fast travel times that flying offered.

But passenger ships are more popular than ever and the cruise industry is seeing record growth rates. In fact, cruising is so popular that cruise companies are building larger more luxurious cruise ships in a bid to win the hearts and minds of the traveler.

Of the many number of cruises available the Caribbean remains one of the most popular destination spots for vacationers in the world. Comprised of hundreds of islands each with their own distinct personality a cruise to the Caribbean is a vacation experience that won't soon be forgotten.

The Caribbean is geographically divided into three regions and cruises are usually centered on one of these areas but rest assured that no matter which region you pick you will experience beautiful weather and gorgeous sandy beaches.

The Eastern Caribbean Get Ready To Shop

The Eastern Caribbean region is made up of a set of islands known as the Lesser Antilles that extend 600 miles along the Eastern side of the Caribbean Sea. This area is much more commercially developed than the Western and Southern Caribbean areas and as a result is more heavily visited by tourists.

Daytime temperatures in the 80s with lows at night in the 70s make it perfect for vacationers wanting to escape the frigid U.S. winters if only for a week or two. The Hurricane season runs from June through the beginning of November and the Eastern Caribbean is more prone to hurricanes as the other regions so keep that in mind.

The Bahamas are probably the most well know of the Eastern Caribbean islands but St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Puerto Rico are also very popular and sure to please.

Those cruising for the first time might want to consider an Eastern Caribbean cruise as these cruises usually offer more days at sea and the islands visited are less of a culture shock for those not used to traveling outside the country. Because of this they are also more crowded and more costly than the Western and Southern Caribbean.

Diving and snorkeling is good here just not as good as the Western and Southern Caribbean but you will find the duty-free shopping to be among the best in the world with many big name luxury retailers having stores on the islands. Plan your trip around any major luxury goods purchases you are going to make and you might save enough to pay for your vacation.

loved it

I live in Australia and you can look in numerous book stores and still not find a book as specific as this one for our upcoming cruise. I like they way it is simple to find the ports we will be visiting and departure port. It provides information that otherwise I would not be able to find. I loved it!!!

Not Your Typical Travel Book

by Joshua L. Peterson from Wyoming on 2009-04-16
I like this book, its almost set up like an encyclopedia for cruising the caribbean. A bit of history on the region, alot of color pictures, and quite a bit of attractions on what to see when you get off the boat. Its put together really well and made of awesome thick paper to last forever. DONT let this be the only book you buy about the caribbean, you need another one to tell you where to eat which this one doesnt. This book is a good companion book to the Lonely Planet Caribbean Island book. If you like eye candy at work thinking about your trip you wont be upset with this book.

Caribbean by Cruise Ship

by R. Dobbs from Ohio, USA on 2009-03-11
This book was a great help. We took it with us on our recent cruise to the Southern Caribbean. It provided a ton of information from where to go, what to see, and even the currency rate. We would recommend this book to anyone who is going on a Caribbean cruise.

Colorful cruise book

by Lawrence H. Oswald from Coventry, CT United States on 2008-01-26
This is a physically heavy but informationally lightweight guide for crusing in the Caribbean. It is good but not great. We found it only slightly useful, preferring the Insight Guide Caribbean Cruises for more content and especially the "Cruising the Eastern Caribbean" more suitable to our nature oriented tastes. The latter book covers only EASTERN islands.

well thoughtout guidebook

by cruise companion from on 2007-12-28
We just returned from a 10 day southern Caribbean cruise and found this book invaluable. The maps were great! Details on shore excursions and port attractions allowed us to focus on aspects we were interested in and also gave us the confidence to do walkabouts. Great book, highly recommended.

Sailing away

by C. Handy from New Hampshire on 2010-09-03
We are getting ready to embark on a 14 day Caribbean cruise and were interested in the various ports of call. This book gave us some valuable information on getting around the islands as well as those excursions that were worthwhile taking.

Travel Book

by Eric Buckman from Saint Paul, MN on 2010-03-07
This book was nice, it described the ports of call that we visited in detail.it did not, however, contain a section for Labadee, Haiti. this is a private beach owned by Royal Caribbean Intl, so i can see why this was not included.good book, fast shipping.

Ports of Call

I personally did not read this book, I bought it for my pastor and his wife who won a cruise. I can tell you it arrived in a timely manner and was in excellent condition. I always rely on Frommer's travel guides-they are the best.

Typical travel guide

by Judith A. Law from Bethany Beach, DE USA on 2009-12-05
Typical travel guide - but in reality, I should have just gone to the library, checked out a similar or same book, photocopied the pages I wanted - or found the same information on line. I won't buy these type of books again as I always end up using just a small portion of them.

Frommer's Caribbean Ports of Call

by Alamo Jim from San Antonio, TX, USA on 2009-08-09
A useful book for planning visits to Caribbean islands. I am using this with the descriptions of my cruise ship's shore excursions: Do I want the shorex, or do I do the sightseeing on my own? The book also gives opinions on what is worthwhile to see and what isn't...which you don't get from the cruise line (everything is worth seeing). The recommendations on what to buy or not buy at each stop are also worthwhile. The acid test for this book will come when I take the cruise: were the recommendations good or not?

What should be called the Idiots Guide to Cruises.

by Book buyer from on 2010-06-08
The publishers of this horror called this guide Frommer's Cruises and Ports of Call. It should have borrowed the title of a now defunct travel book series--The Complete Itiots' Guide to Cruises. As a faithful user of the Frommer guides for years--Italy, England, Spain, France, etc.--I, along with my husband and children, decided to take a Caribbean cruise. Naturally, I picked up the ever faithful Frommer guide. Never again. Frommer made its reputation on reliable, solid information. Then along came a so-called writer Matt Hannafin, who weems to have trouble putting a sentence together. The book is poorly written, even laughable in spots. I could deal with that. What I couldn't deal with is the mother lode of misinformation. We counted at least three major errors per page. I was left wondering if Hannafin had ever been to the Caribbean. I suspect not. He seems to have gathered this highly perishable information mainly from the Internet and probably from brochures handed out from the various PR departments of the cruise ships themselves. Don't leave home with this book! You'll be sorry you did. The information in the 2010 edition was completely out of date. When we made inquiries, we found that some of this information was copied word for word from the internet, and hadn't been true in three or four years. This is supposed to be a book updated annually. Hannafin did not update it. The section on ports of call is so brief that it was completely worthless. If you're going to Hawaii, Mexico, or the Caribbean, you can get far better data on the web. If the publishers of the Complete Idiots' Guide ever want to relaunch their series, we recommend they hire Hannafin. He fits the bill perfectly. So-called "writers" like him are destroying the once stellar reputation of the Frommer guides. In the future we'll use Fodor, not this worthless tome. Save your $25. A dissatisfied customer.

Experience life at sea…!_____________________The Purser: A recent college graduate joins a cruise ship in the Caribbean as assistant purser with the intention of doing some traveling. He forgets, however, that he met her aboard the ship's world of fantasy. In the ensuing conflict between his desire to be with her and his love for the sea he realizes that, as with the rest of the men aboard, it is too late for him to go back, for he is now a seaman and the sea is his only home.About the Author: Walter Aschiero holds degrees in computer information systems and modern languages. He has served as purser aboard cruise ships of Bahamian, Finnish, Italian and Norwegian registry. In addition to ships and the sea, his interests include literature, mountaineering, martial arts, and a lifelong passion for the fine art of tea.

A Seaman's Tale of Unrequited Love

by Greg Fenderson from Sea Cliff, New York United States on 2009-06-05
This light read is a well written description of what life aboard a cruise ship was like for one young man before mega-ships. The author weaves a tale around what we're lead to believe his life was like as a Purser aboard this vessel that plies the Caribbean from its Miami homeport; we see the outcome of his infatuation with a passenger early on, before he does, sadly, and we're left to ponder what might have been. Ahh, but what sweet memories...

Perfect quick info

by I Teach Typing from Stanford, CA USA on 2009-10-19
This book is a wonderfully accurate well written guide which jibes nicely with my experiences on the islands. Each island is covered by at least one overall map showing the location of the cities, beaches, major sites, etc.. There are also detailed area maps of the major cities. For every island there is a brief, nicely written, history. There are many "At a glance" tables that rate the islands (on a 5 star scale) for: antiquities, architecture, art and artists, beaches, colonial buildings, crafts, cuisine, culture, dining/restaurants, entertainment, forts, history, monuments, museums, nightlife, scenery, shopping, sightseeing, sports and transportation. Each of these areas are then broken down with the names, phone numbers, and web information for the major businesses, venues, etc.. There is also a lot of information on the prices for the activities. The transportation information is particularly useful with the contact information for things like ferry service. The book is full of ideas about where to shop and what is worth buying (or at least seeing if you are on a window-shopping budget). If you want to get/carry a single book that covers all the important stuff in the eastern and southern ports, get this one.

The splendor of the Caribbean and the pleasures of cruising make an unbeatable combination. Accessibility, good prices, superb weather, and variety make cruising the Caribbean an ideal vacation choice. This guide, based on the author's personal experience, shows you how to plan a carefree vacation at sea. (5 1/2 x 8 1/2, 368 pages, b&w photos, maps, icons)

If you're going to cruise the Caribbean, you need a guidebook focusing on the ports of call, not weighing you down with options you won't have time to explore. Kay Showker's guide gives cruise selection advice, provides information on 22 Caribbean cruise lines and 105 ships, then delves into the eastern and southern Caribbean Islands, from Puerto Rico to the San Blas Islands off Panama. For each of the 30 islands, Showker gives "Fast Facts" of population, size, government, currency, language, holidays, and telephone codes. She profiles island transportation, shore excursions, walking and driving tours, shopping, snorkeling, and dining options, nightlife, sports, and highlights--in short, all you'll need to know.

Handy Guide to the Caribbean

by from on 2000-04-03
This guide is useful for a vacation on a cruise to the caribbean. The reviews of the excursions are very helpful for planning your own excursions. It tells you if it easy or difficult to use ship's excursions versus your own transportation. It also highlights popular atractions in each port.

by Lawrence H. Oswald from Coventry, CT United States on 2008-01-26
Insight Guides usually are good for preparation for a trip but not so good for the nitty gritty of the trip. In the case of Caribbean Cruises however, this book worked well to choose which things to target in our one day per island off the boat.

Really Good!

Listen to a free companion podcast on Frommers.com A cruise is a complete vacation, so it's important that you choose the one that's right for you. Frommer's Cruises & Ports of Call is the most user-friendly, opinionated, and comprehensive guide you can buy before you set sail. We provide in-depth coverage on cruises departing from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, Alaska, Bermuda, Mexico and Canada. Unlike rating systems used in other guides, our system is simple. We break down the essential elements of a cruise experience (dining, activities, children's activities, entertainment, service, overall enjoyment, and overall value), and rate them from "poor" to "outstanding." Photos of each ship combine with the text to give a better sense of the very real differences among the various lines. Most important, this is the only cruise guide that provides the real prices people pay for cruises, not just the rack rates. Other guides tell you that a seven-night cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas costs $1,919. You can pay that if you want to, but only Frommer's tells you that the same cruise is selling for $999. We give both the rack rates and the discount price for every cruise we review. This feature alone makes Frommer's Cruises and Ports of Call by far the most valuable trip-planning book among cruise guides. Our authors, noted cruise experts who've personally checked out every ship sailing in and around North America, offer candid and unbiased opinions on them all. They are completely up to date, with all the latest developments and the newest ships. You'll also get complete coverage of the major port destinations, with advice on how to spend your limited time ashore.

Caribbean Ports of Call

Great book to throw in your backpack and take with you on the cruise. You can bone up on a bit of the history and it will get some ideas ffor excursions or places to visit on the islands.

Great Source of information

by P. J. Considine from Troy, New York on 2008-02-28
I found this book to be a valuable resource as I prepare for my first cruise. I'm sure I will refer to it again & again for any future cruises (which I hope are many!).

These are great!

by Decorating Fanatic from GA on 2008-01-22
These books are great tools. I have cruised many times and I still consult them before every cruise. I would say they are must haves for first timers. They summarize the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, as well as many debarkation ports. What I find most useful is the information provided on each of the cruise lines and cruise ships. If you are unsure which ship would be best for you and your family this book will definitely help you decide. I would caution potential buyers visiting very small or less popular islands. Places like Anguilla, Trinidad and Tobago are noticeably absent from the book.

this book is very honest
